The "Profit Key" for Recycling Plant Owners to Quietly Make Money: From a Technical Perspective, How Screening Becomes the "Calibrator" of Sorting Efficiency

        People often ask: "Do recycling plants make money by relying on sorting equipment? Isn't multiple screening processes just a waste of money?" However, those bosses who make profits quietly know clearly that the screening process is by no means an "extra burden," but a exclusive key to unlock profits. They never publicize it, but with this key, they turn the "waste materials" that others find troublesome into "real money" in their accounts—especially for those plants that are torn about "whether to add screening."

       Some people also question: "Isn't screening just passing materials through a sieve? How much technical know - how can it have?" But the recycling plant owners who have increased their profits have long seen through the technical essence of this process—it is not simply "sieving," but through precise particle size control, targeted impurity removal, and pre - optimization of material properties, it builds an "efficient operation coordinate system" for subsequent sorting equipment. The technical core of this "profit key" is hidden in three hard indicators, each of which is directly related to real benefits.

一、Particle Size Classification: Making Sorting Equipment "Work in the Optimal Parameter Range"
All sorting equipment (magnetic separation, eddy current separation, air separation, etc.) has a "golden processing particle size range", just like a car engine has an "optimal speed range"—deviating from this range will cause a cliff like drop in efficiency. The core technical value of screening is to "trim" the mixed materials to the "comfort zone" of the sorting equipment through the design of the screen mesh aperture.
Take the eddy current separator as an example. Its principle of separating metals is to use an alternating magnetic field to generate eddy currents in metal particles, forming a repulsive force for separation. But the magnitude of this force is proportional to the square of the particle diameter (F∝d²):
• When the particle diameter is <5mm, the eddy current force is insufficient, and it is easy to mix with non - metallic particles, with a recovery rate of <70%;
• When the particle diameter is >50mm, the particle inertia is too large, and the repulsive force cannot overcome gravity, so metals are easily discharged with the tailings, with a purity of <80%;
• However, when the particles are controlled by multi - stage screening into 0 - 5mm, 5 - 8mm, 8 - 20mm, and above 20mm, the eddy current force matches the inertia, the recovery rate can reach more than 98%, and the purity exceeds 99.5%.
The measured data of a waste metal recycling plant is more intuitive: when the unscreened mixed materials (particle size 2 - 80mm) are separated by eddy current, the recovery rate of copper and aluminum is only 80%; after grading with multi - stage screens (0 - 5mm, 5 - 8mm, 8 - 20mm, 20mm), and sorting the multi - stage materials, the recovery rate soars to 99%, and the value of the metal recovered per ton is about 400 yuan more. This is the technical logic of screening: using particle size classification to make the sorting equipment always work in the optimal parameter area, and turning "ineffective processing" into "effective benefits".

二、Impurity Removal: Reducing "Unnecessary Energy Consumption and Wear" of Equipment
Impurities in recycled materials (such as concrete blocks >80mm, glass fragments, fiber fabrics) are "technical interference sources" for sorting equipment—they not only do not generate value, but also force the equipment to "do useless work", resulting in soaring energy consumption and accelerated component wear. The technical value of screening lies in the targeted removal of these "interference sources" through the matching design of vibration parameters and screen meshes.
From the perspective of equipment mechanics:
• When large impurities (such as 100mm crushed stones) enter the conveyor belt, the instantaneous tension of the belt will increase by 30%, and the load fluctuation range of the motor will exceed ±25%. Long term operation will double the aging speed of the motor insulation layer and shorten the service life to 60% of the design value;
• Fiber impurities (such as plastic bags and fabrics) will wrap around the sorting drum, causing the drum speed deviation to exceed 5%, the stability of the eddy current magnetic field to decrease, and the metal recognition accuracy to reduce by 15% - 20%.
The comparative test of a construction waste recycling plant shows that when processing unscreened materials (containing 15% large impurities), the total energy consumption of the sorting line is 8.5kW·h/ton, and the equipment is maintained an average of 2 times a month; after installing a 40mm aperture vibrating screen (vibration frequency 16Hz, amplitude 8mm) to remove large blocks, the energy consumption is reduced to 6.2kW·h/ton (a decrease of 27%), and the equipment maintenance cycle is extended to 3 months/time, saving about 12,000 yuan in electricity bills + maintenance fees every month. This is the technical value of screening: using impurity removal to reduce the "invalid energy consumption" and "forced wear" of the equipment, and locking the "implicit costs" in the benefits.

三、Material Homogenization: Improving the "Process Stability" of the Sorting System
The profit fluctuations in the recycling industry often stem from "unstable material properties"—in the same batch of materials, the humidity, particle size, and density vary too much, which will lead to frequent adjustment of the parameters of the sorting equipment, and finally result in the problem of "over sorting (losing materials) or under sorting (mixing materials) sometimes". The technical value of screening lies in making the materials entering the sorting link "more uniform in properties" through multi - stage screening and pre - homogenization design.
From the perspective of process control:
• Materials with a humidity >12% are easy to stick to the screen mesh, and during the screening process, by adjusting the vibration direction angle (such as 30° - 45°), the centrifugal force can be used to break the adhesion, so that the moisture content of the materials is stable at 8%±1%, avoiding the "light material agglomeration" during the subsequent air separation;
• For materials with a particle size standard deviation (reflecting the particle size dispersion) >20mm, the purity fluctuation range of sorting can reach ±10%; after the screening control standard deviation is <5mm, the purity fluctuation can be reduced to ±3%, and the purchase price of downstream manufacturers has a premium of 5% - 8%.
The practice of a plastic recycling plant confirms this point: when sorting unscreened PET flakes (particle size 5 - 100mm, humidity 15%), the purity fluctuates between 75% and 90%, and the selling price is 4,200 - 4,800 yuan/ton; after two - stage screening (30mm + 5mm) + vibration dehydration (amplitude 5mm, frequency 20Hz), the material particle size is 5 - 30mm, the humidity is 8%, the purity is stable at 92%±2%, and the selling price is locked at 5,200 yuan/ton, with a premium of 400 - 1,000 yuan per ton. This is the technical value of screening: using material homogenization to improve the "process stability" of the sorting system, and transforming the "price fluctuation risk" into "stable benefits".
Ultimate Conclusion at the Technical Level:
The "profit key" of screening is essentially to build an "efficient operation baseline" for subsequent sorting through three technical means: particle size control, impurity removal, and material homogenization. Its technical value is not reflected in "one more process", but in making every kilowatt - hour of electricity, every operation, and every wear of the sorting equipment be transformed into quantifiable resource recovery value.
Those recycling plant owners who make money quietly never say that "screening is redundant"—because their equipment sensors, energy consumption reports, and sorting purity records have long proved with technical data that this process is not a cost, but a "core investment" to exchange technical precision for profit thickness.

Study on the Application of HUICHUAN Eddy Current Separator ECS Series with Radial Multi-Layer Magnetic Structure Roller in Recovering Non-Ferrous Metals from Multi-Source Waste

Aiming at the challenge of efficiently separating non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, silver, etc.) from electronic waste, household appliance waste, and end-of-life vehicle waste, this study systematically verified the performance of HUICHUAN Eddy Current Separator ECS series, featuring a radial multi-layer magnetic structure roller (high-frequency 32-pole + eccentric design + double-layer magnetic system), in the "screening classification-eddy current separation" collaborative process. The 20kg mixed samples provided by Japan Environmental Recycling Co., Ltd. were used for experiments. Results showed that the radial multi-layer magnetic structure increased the radial repulsion distances of aluminum, copper, and silver by 20.30%, 9.04%, and 7.46% respectively, with the radial repulsion distance difference between copper and aluminum increased by 132.42% and the eddy current force fluctuation coefficient reduced by 88.43%. Combined with screening pretreatment, the copper recovery rate from electronic waste reached 96.8% (purity 90.2%), aluminum recovery rate 95.5% (purity 89.1%); the aluminum purity from household appliance waste increased to 89.7%, and the separation efficiency of copper and silver from vehicle waste improved by 22%. This study confirms that the radial multi-layer magnetic structure breaks the bottleneck of traditional magnetic rollers with "low separation efficiency among different non-ferrous metals" by enhancing magnetic field gradient and stability, providing technical support for one-stop recovery of high-value metals from multi-source waste.
